News from the Dominican Republic - Monday, January 29, 2007

The team hit the job site hard today.  The sun was hot!!!  The praise is that we finished more block work than we thought and should finish all the block work that we can tomorrow.  This means that the walls will be done on all four sides, including interior rooms, up to a hight of about 5-6 feet.  The columns will then be poured by contractors before the windows are set.

We have plenty of other things to do, so we will not run out of work.  Bob Light stayed back at the Vallette's house today and got several much-needed repair jobs done on plumbing, etc.  Paul was sent down the sump pump hole to dig out some concrete so that he could fit the line with a new check valve.  This will keep the first floor of the church from flooding if the pump fails.

Another joy today was that some of the church members helped us with the work.  It is a Dominican holiday so they had the day off and spent it with us.

We worked until 6pm and headed back to the house for a spagetti meal and some much-needed showers.  Tomorrow, I'll try to get a picture of us piled in the back of a small pick-up truck (i.e. taxi) and flying through the streets of Santiago as we go to and from work.

Please pray that we don't fry in the sun and that we accomplish much tomorrow.  I might not get tomorrow's update posted very promptly.  We will be dividing the group in the evening and going to the homes of some of the church families for dinner.  They don't speak English and we don't speak Spanish, so pray that our sign language is good!  Richie doesn't stay around to translate.  He says it's good for us!

We caught "the missionary" on tape using power tools!  The rest of us stood a safe distance away with safety glasses.  He made real progress once Mark pointed out that he was running the drill backwards.  The rest is a view of the job site.
